I wanted to touch on something today that is sometimes not talked about, or at least maybe not openly talked about. It’s the last day of October as I write this and the last day for Domestic Violence Awareness Month. It should be observed every day of the year. Everyone should be aware of what it is and that it happens in all cultures, races, socioeconomic groups, religions, it has no boundaries!
What is the definition of domestic violence?
Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence.
Domestic violence is not only physical abuse. There is also psychological, emotional, financial and sexual abuse.
1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men you know is a victim of domestic violence. You just may not know who.
I am one of those 1 in 4 of people you know. I am a survivor of psychological, emotional, financial, and yes, sexual abuse. That is a hard sentence to write because there will be doubters, backlash from some who want to call me a liar, and those who say wow, I never knew and even some who will say you did it to yourself by staying why didn't you leave.
What I have learned in the last 2 1/2 years.
* I did not cause this
* My coping skills are freeze and flight, I am learning about how I cope with things
* I have triggers
* I am empowered
* I am self determined
* I chose me
* One of my goals in life is help others struggling or facing domestic violence by sharing my story.
Until next time.....chose joy, chose you!
